Enhancing the Digital Experience for Wandal Art
Project Overview
Sebastian Wandl, known professionally as Wandal, is a German contemporary artist recognized for his photorealistic paintings, drawings, and large-scale murals. His website serves as both a digital gallery and an e-commerce platform, allowing visitors to explore his artwork, discover available prints and paintings, and enquire about commissioned work.
The challenge was to improve the existing Shopify storefront while preserving the distinctive artistic identity behind the brand. The website needed a theme upgrade, greater design flexibility, clearer navigation, and a more intuitive shopping experience.
Working with Shopify and frontend technologies, I contributed to the website revamp through theme customization, custom-coded solutions, e-commerce improvements, and foundational SEO.
The goal was to create a digital experience that showcased the artwork effectively while making it easier for visitors to navigate the store and explore purchasing options.
The Challenge
An artist's website needs to do more than display beautiful images. It must communicate the artist's identity, organize a diverse portfolio, and provide a straightforward path from discovering a piece of art to making a purchase.
The existing Shopify storefront presented several opportunities for improvement:
1. An outdated Shopify theme
The theme needed to be upgraded to take advantage of newer features and maintain a more modern storefront.
2. Limited design flexibility
The existing theme did not provide all the customization options required to achieve the desired visual presentation. Custom frontend development was needed to adapt the storefront to the brand's identity.
3. Navigation and user experience
The website needed a clearer structure so visitors could find artwork collections, explore individual pieces, and discover commission options more easily.
4. E-commerce improvements
Product discovery and presentation needed attention to create a more cohesive shopping journey, from browsing collections to reviewing individual artworks.
5. Foundational SEO
The website also needed attention to basic search engine optimization, helping establish a clearer content structure and making key pages easier for search engines and potential customers to understand.
The Approach & Solutions
1. Shopify Theme Upgrade & Custom Frontend Development
The first step was upgrading the Shopify theme and adapting it to better support the website's design and functional requirements.
Rather than relying exclusively on the theme's default settings, I used custom frontend development to extend its capabilities and create a more tailored storefront.
My work involved:
Upgrading the Shopify theme to a newer version.
Using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Shopify Liquid to customize the storefront.
Adjusting sections and layout structures to improve the presentation of the content.
Refining visual elements and animations to align with Wandal's artistic identity.
Adapting theme components where the default customization options were too restrictive.
This approach allowed the website to retain the advantages of Shopify's e-commerce platform while offering greater flexibility over the frontend experience.
2. Improving Website Navigation & User Experience
For an artist, the artwork should be the focus of the website. The interface needs to support the visual experience without creating unnecessary friction.
I worked on refining the homepage, navigation, and overall presentation to make the website easier to explore.
Key improvements included:
Homepage presentation: Improving the layout to give the artwork a stronger visual presence.
Navigation structure: Making it easier to move between different artwork categories and key sections of the website.
Clearer calls to action: Helping visitors understand where to go next when browsing collections or exploring available options.
Visual consistency: Refining typography, colors, spacing, and interface elements to create a more cohesive experience.
The aim was to balance the expressive nature of an artist's portfolio with the clarity and usability expected from an online store.
3. Optimizing the E-Commerce Experience
The website needed to work as a practical sales channel as well as a showcase for Wandal's work.
I focused on making the product discovery experience more intuitive and improving how artwork was presented throughout the store.
Clearer product discovery
Organizing the store around relevant categories helped visitors navigate the different types of artwork available, including prints, paintings, and commission work.
Improved product presentation
Artwork benefits from a visual-first shopping experience. Refinements to product layouts and image presentation helped visitors explore the work more clearly and understand the available options.
A more cohesive shopping journey
Navigation, product information, and calls to action were considered as parts of the same experience. The objective was to make moving from a collection to an individual artwork feel more natural and straightforward.
These improvements supported the wider goal of creating an online store that feels consistent with the artist's brand while remaining easy to use.
4. Establishing a Foundation for SEO
Alongside the design and e-commerce work, I included basic SEO considerations as part of the website revamp.
For an artist selling work online, search visibility can provide another way for potential collectors and customers to discover the brand. A clear website structure also helps visitors understand the relationship between different collections, product pages, and other content.
The SEO foundation focused on the essentials of a well-organized online storefront:
Content structure: Organizing pages and collections around clear, descriptive categories.
On-page SEO considerations: Taking page titles, meta descriptions, headings, and relevant page content into account.
Product and collection discoverability: Supporting clearer pathways to artwork categories and individual products.
Shopify's SEO foundations: Working within the platform's existing structure and capabilities when developing the storefront.
The intention was to support the website's discoverability while maintaining a natural, visitor-friendly experience.
This was foundational SEO work rather than a comprehensive SEO campaign. It formed part of a broader effort to create a more organized, usable, and maintainable online presence.
Results & Impact
The project brought together technical implementation, visual refinement, e-commerce improvements, and foundational SEO in a single website revamp.
The resulting direction focused on several key outcomes:
A more tailored storefront
Custom theme modifications provided greater flexibility in presenting Wandal's artwork and aligning the website with his artistic identity.
A clearer browsing experience
Refinements to navigation and page layouts helped create a more intuitive structure for exploring collections and individual artworks.
A more cohesive e-commerce journey
Improvements to product presentation and navigation supported a more consistent experience from discovering artwork to exploring purchase options.
A foundation for search discoverability
Basic SEO considerations complemented the structural improvements, helping establish a more organized starting point for the website's ongoing visibility.
Together, these elements helped position the website as both a visual portfolio and a functional e-commerce destination.
Key Takeaways
This project reinforced an important principle: effective website development is not simply about making a website look better. It is about ensuring that design, technology, content, and business goals work together.
For a creative brand, that balance is particularly important. The website needs to preserve the personality of the work while providing the structure and functionality visitors need to explore it.
The project brought together several areas of my work:
Shopify development: Working with themes and Liquid to customize an e-commerce storefront.
Frontend engineering: Using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to implement tailored design and functional improvements.
User experience: Improving navigation, content hierarchy, and the product browsing journey.
E-commerce thinking: Considering how product organization and presentation support the customer journey.
SEO foundations: Incorporating basic search optimization considerations into the broader website structure.
Conclusion: Connecting Art, Technology & Commerce
The Wandal Art project was an opportunity to bring together frontend development, Shopify customization, user experience improvements, and basic SEO within a real-world e-commerce project.
By extending the theme beyond its default capabilities and refining the way artwork was presented and explored, I helped shape a storefront better suited to the needs of an artist-led brand.
For me, the project demonstrates how technical implementation and thoughtful design can work together to support a clear business objective: creating a digital experience that showcases creative work while making it easier for people to discover and engage with it.
